New test to rapidly screen cognitive abilities

FORT LAUDERDALE, November 30, 2006  -- SpecialtyAutomated  Systems Corporation has developed a test for rapidly detecting cognitive impairment.  It is based on the clock drawing test, a popular tool that screens for cognitive dysfunction secondary to dementia, delirium, and various neurological and psychiatric illnesses.  The Automatic Clock Drawing  Test ™ is fully computerized with instant scoring and feedback.  It standardizes a paper-based process that, until now, required numerous administration and scoring techniques.

“Unlike the paper-based clock drawing tests, the Automatic Clock Drawing Test ™ by SpecialtyAutomated  engages the physically challenged, particularly subjects with low vision, neuropsychologic and neuromotor disorders, such as Parkinson’s Disease, or conditions that prohibit subjects from holding writing instruments.  Plus, research shows that the test requires about three minutes to take and results are correlated with age.  Collectively, this saves considerable time, labor, and expense for clinicians.” said Robert Michaels of SpecialtyAutomated

The Automatic Clock Drawing Test is also most ideal for Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) where self-service cognition tests are direly needed to screen at-risk drivers and dementia drivers.  These drivers, such as the one who was recently sentenced for killing ten and injuring more than 70 people at a Santa Monica, California outdoor market, underscore the importance of periodic and adequate cognition testing.  The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that the age 65 years and over population is expected to double in the next 25 years.  Some studies also project a 400% surge in the incidence of dementia.  Since Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, similar jumps are expected.  Such increases are expected to pose risks to public health and coincide with surges in car crash involvement,

“The applications of the  Automatic Clock Drawing Test are limitless because clocks are universally recognized symbols of time.” added Michaels.   “Our tests can be used in clinics, schools, hospitals, militaries, and DMVs, among other government agencies.”

The Automatic Clock Drawing Test is available in English, Spanish, French, and Arabic, among other languages.  A full line of  Automatic Clock Drawing Test products is now available.
